My Educational Journey
In order to truly understand my academic record, a person needs to take into account various factors that have influenced my educational journey.
The first and foremost factor is that I was never well-suited for academic pursuits. Indeed, from a very young age, I struggled with school, and was later diagnosed with dyslexia. Although I have learned over the years how to compensate for this handicap and partially overcome, it has nevertheless dogged my steps in every academic course I have ever taken.
The second factor is that I have struggled for more than 30 years with a physical condition called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. As an ailment, it is not life-threatening, but it has made my academic pursuits most arduous. It is hard enough being dyslexic, but try studying topics like philosophy, theology, Greek, and Hebrew while feeling tired all the time. If it wasn’t for God’s generosity—his grace—I would have given up a long time ago.
And finally, there has been a large assortment of other factors that have protracted my educational journey: depression, theological crises, running out of money, family hardships, and so on. In short, it has taken most of my adult life to complete my formal education. Consequently, for those who desire to learn from a natural scholar, I’m not the teacher for them. But for those who want to learn from someone who has attended The School of Hard-Knocks, I believe I have something to offer them.
